Injury boost for aussies: Green, Cummins, and Hazlewood roar back for WTC final showdown

In a major boost to their World Test Championship (WTC) final hopes, Australia has named Cameron Green, Pat Cummins, and Josh Hazlewood in their 15-man squad for the upcoming clash against South Africa at Lord’s next month. The inclusion of the trio, who have all overcome recent injuries, injects considerable firepower and experience into the Australian lineup as they aim to defend their WTC title.

All-rounder Cameron Green makes a welcome return to the national side after an extended layoff of almost 12 months due to a stress fracture in his lower back, which required surgery last October. The talented 25-year-old has been proving his fitness with Gloucestershire in the English county circuit, even notching a century, signaling his readiness for the crucial Test. His ability to contribute with both bat and ball offers Australia vital balance and flexibility.

Captain Pat Cummins is also set to lead the team after missing the recent Test series against Sri Lanka. The premier fast bowler was sidelined due to the birth of his second child in February and subsequently suffered an ankle injury that ruled him out of the Champions Trophy. His return not only bolsters the pace attack but also provides crucial leadership on the field as Australia prepares for the high-stakes encounter.

Adding further strength to the bowling department is the comeback of Josh Hazlewood. The experienced right-arm pacer has recovered from a hip injury that kept him out of the Sri Lanka tour. Hazlewood’s accuracy, control, and ability to extract bounce make him a potent threat in English conditions, and his return alongside Cummins and Mitchell Starc forms a formidable pace trio.

Chief Selector George Bailey expressed his enthusiasm about the squad, saying, “We’re pleased and excited to welcome back Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, and Cam Green.” He highlighted the team’s strong finish to the World Test Championship cycle, noting their impressive series win in Sri Lanka and a landmark summer victory over India — their first in a decade. “These achievements reflect a consistent level of performance over the past two years and set up a thrilling chance for us to defend the World Test Championship title,” he added.

The returning trio will join a solid core of seasoned Australian players, including batsmen Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Steve Smith, and Travis Head, along with spinners Nathan Lyon and Matt Kuhnemann. Rising talent Sam Konstas has also earned a spot in the squad, offering another opening option. Alex Carey continues as the primary wicketkeeper, with Josh Inglis named as his backup.

Australia, who won the inaugural World Test Championship in 2023 by defeating India at The Oval, are aiming to become the first nation to win the title twice. Their journey to the final saw them secure impressive series victories and consistent performances throughout the two-year cycle.

Following the WTC final against South Africa, which commences on June 11 at Lord’s, the same 15-man squad will also travel to the Caribbean for a three-match Test series against the West Indies, starting on June 25.

The return of Green, Cummins, and Hazlewood has undoubtedly strengthened Australia’s chances as they gear up for the World Test Championship final. Their experience and skill will be crucial as they face a formidable South African side in what promises to be an enthralling contest at the Home of Cricket.
